Detailed to the max and a must have companion

I have no clue why anyone would say that this book is not fully detailed or hard to follow concerning maps but regardless do not listen.. Here is the gist on the first reviewers issue on the treasure maps which is that there are maps but the in game map they give you for treasures is a scrap with landscapes on them, in order for you to find them you have to use your head.. On the in game map legend, the map that comes with your game, you know the huge one that folds out that you should get with the game and is also in the book.. You must look at your scraps of treasure maps that will show you a tree with some terrain on it, or a rock formation, maybe a river and at that point you have to identify that terrain on your map, once you locate the terrain on your paper map then waypoint it on the in game map legend(easy as can be)

I mean I'm not tryin to be rude but this is a strategy guide not a cheat book, you still have to think and you cant just rely on the book to do everything..Whats the fun in that..Waypoints are going to be one of your best friends in finding all the extras, you can use the nice track feature to lead you to outfit objectives

This book has the full details you will need to complete all missions, all side quests, treasure finds and anything else you will need that I didn't mention..You should have no problem with this book, it's an easy step by step book categorized in sections, I would never have found out about half of the different quests on this game without it..Particularly the treasure maps and also the flowers and hunting achievements which were all really cool to do I might add, not to mention the DLC information that is only available in book form in this game of the year edition..Hey, it's even a hardcover..Cant beat that(There is a map in the book that will tell you exactly where the treasures, outfits, certain animals and also stranger mission locations that way you may waypoint them on your in game legend...You WILL have to look for the treasure visually once you get there but it is not difficult with the scrap and also the description...Once level 10 is completed it will give you a satchel that allows you to carry more consumable items

I would have to suggest getting this book with the game as it is endless in the amount of things to do. In some cases, the maps and tidbits will be of utmost importance to achieve 100 percent completion. Achieving 100 percent completion will give you a pinkerton outfit, which allows you to have the authority of being the highest law enforcement agent in the game. This allowing you to have free will, to do what you please, almost anywhere with no consequences. The game of the year edition companion book has a decently thorough review by me also

Another Important aspect of the game is the ambient challenges, treasures and outfit objectives. You may consider doing these all first and the Reason I say that is because certain outfits will help you immensely. The deadly assassin outfit for instance, will refill your dead eye twice as fast..When fighting constantly it will make a big difference.

Master Hunter: When you unlock the Master hunter outfit. It will reward you with you twice the pelts, meat and other items when hunting(While wearing it)..Achieving master hunter will give you viddles to refill health out of your hunted prey, or achieving level 5 gives you the buffalo rifle.

Survivalist: This is tedious, rather they all are in each their own way but purchase a survivalist map to use at the general store, use it once in the area of which your map states that herb or flower will be in. Once at level 5 these maps last longer, then at level 10 you have the ability to harvest plants to make a consumable items to refill your deadeye.

Sharpshooter: At level 5 mastery you will have more ammo within the chests/drawers in your save area, or waking at your campsite. At level 10 mastery you are rewarded with dead eye that replenishes while shooting targets.

These are the most tedious things to do in the game, they take the longest, and some cannot be done till certain areas are unlocked. Though once your whole map is unlocked, like mexico and tall trees then get these done as they will make the game more fun to play through, with the special abilities. If you wait to get them, you will have to go through all this after story mode which may deter you from 100% completion. After the story missions are done, there are no more, so better to use the special things during story mode(It makes it more fun)

One personal piece of important hinting from me(out of experience in the game) is that hunting will allow you to reap the most money benefits in the game. Hunt as much big game as possible, "I spend days just hunting grizzly in tall trees"(tall trees is the most abundant and dangerous hunting ground). "I hunt till I literally have 50-100 grizzly, big cat, boar(Boar will be available to you sooner than grizzly as tall trees is locked at first) pelts. After, I travel to mexico and sell them. The Reasons for this are, they pay the most because they are the farthest from tall trees. Once you sell them, you will have a seemingly inexhaustible supply of money for consumables, guns and ammo..The Lemat revolver and buffalo rifle are themselves hundreds of dollars! In my biggest trip I raked in 13,000 dollars from pelts,meat, and also other sellable parts from the carcass, so it is worth it..Be careful as hunting is as dangerous as it is profitable, more than once I was attacked by two to four grizzlys or 5 wolves. As A matter of fact it will happen often..After such money gains it is just easier not having to worry about grabbing ammo from the dead, or when you save, either way it wont be that much..This also will give you the ability to buy consumables as you please, like moonshine (refills deadeye) or medicine(IMPORTANT! will heal you in the middle of a fight) or horse pills/apples (Also very important as when you need to get somewhere by horse fast or are being chased it refills stamina so your horse doesn't throw you as he will tire easily) very important in the U.S Marshall outfit challenge! SAVE SAVE SAVE! When you have enough pelts while hunting, or Items that you do NOT want to lose if you die, then I suggest you save as much as possible using your campsite because when you die ANYTHING unsaved will be gone! It is really annoying, I forget sometimes...

All above are the hardest thing to do in the game as they also take the most time. When possible, make your game experience more rewarding, it is better to do them early. They may be the most difficult to understand within the book which is why I'm going into such detail, these are the things I wished I knew before starting also
Certain things I have found out like anything that has to do with a poker game challenge in-game it will tell you that you have to beat everyone at a table in a game of poker, well my personal tip is use the elegant suit which allows you to cheat at cards then get caught cheating?! Why? lol well when they challenge you to a shootout in the street, DISARM them, walk back in and keep doing until you have only one guy left to play..Just easier that way, takes less time, make sure you don't kill them though or else you wont be able to play again for a while..

Another thing is when doing bounties, get the outfits first if you can(You will have to do at least a few without the outfit) because when you have a bollard twin outfit and you go after a bollard twin bounty you may ride up unnoticed as an enemy right to your bounty target..Much easier!

Lots of general information, but not that in-depth

The guide comes in a nice hardbound cover which I wasn't expecting. There is a decent amount of general information that will help with the 100% completion of the game. Unfortunately, most of the quests are given nothing more than a general overview. Nothing really in the guide to show you which missions to do in a certain order or detailed maps about where to find treasures. I also found that the online wiki gives better information on how to win at the mini-games or how to beat certain missions. Unless you are a collector of strategy guides, the online resources are much more helpful.

Must have for RDR fans

This is a great hard cover book that is worth the money if you have spent any time exploring the RDR world. This book throughly covers the complete story and contains information that is not present in the previously published guide book. For example, the book has complete coverage of the Undead Nightmare which is not in the original guide and that I have not see published any where else. The book is worth the price just for the Undead information but it is much more than that because it is presents the whole story in a book that you can put on your coffee table.

The evil return of Brock a flesh eating monster!!!!

I feel for poor Natalie! Brock took everything from her in part one. The massive dog has returned to cause more pain, chaos, and death! However Natalie won't stop until Brock pay for what he did! She is on a hunt and despite how weak she was before she has gained strength to face the devil dog head on! This sequel is jam packed with action and horror! I absolutely LOVE it!

Why can't Black Ice just die!!!!!!

I'm sick of this evil man, just when you think that he's going to get what he deserves he gets away again.
Poor Natalie is in for the ride of her life, (Spoiler Alert) Yeah the big bad cra cra dog is dead, dead, dead but at what cost to Natalie? Brock was still sick in here but for some reason Speight didn't want the reader to see the innocent puppy that he was in book one that fooled everyone and I'm glad that right off the back he was all together satanic. (One Big Ass Hell Hound For Sure)

Her mind is gone and now she's about to really go through hell at the hands of Black Ice, unbelievable!!!

Please kill Black Ice in the next book can good beat back the evil that appears that is running rampant in Natalie's World? I hope so!!!!

Yaakov Weber, Ph.D. is a professor of management at the School of Business Administration, College of Management, Rishon Lezion, Israel, and president of the strategic management consulting firm Strategy, Implementation, Results. He has practiced as a strategic management consultant for more than 25 years and has assisted executives of numerous companies in successfully managing various stages of domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, including planning, negotiation, and integration. He lectures at various universities in the United States, Western and Eastern Europe, and China, in graduate schools of business administration as well as executive programs. He has conducted numerous workshops to top executives in many countries. Dr. Weber’s studies have been published in top international academic and practitioner journals, and his papers have received more than 2,000 citations in leading journals and books. He is the winner of the 2010 Outstanding Author Contribution Award. Professor Weber is co-founder and co-president of the EuroMed Research Business Institute (www.emrbi.com), the EuroMed Academy of Business, and the EuroMed Research Centre. EMRBI performs a variety of international academic and business activities (conferences, business research, teaching, training programs, and so on) that involve businesses and consultants in, and related to, the EuroMed region.

Shlomo Y. Tarba, Ph.D. is a lecturer in Strategic Management and Global Strategic Partnerships at the Management School, The University of Sheffield, UK. He received his Ph.D. from Ben-Gurion University and master’s degree in biotechnology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. His research papers has been published in journals such as Academy of Management Perspectives, International Studies of Management & Organization, Thunderbird International Business Review, International Journal of Cross- Cultural Management, Human Resource Management Review, Advances in Mergers and Acquisitions, and others. Dr. Tarba has served as a guest editor for the special issues on Strategic Agility at California Management Review; Organizational Ambidexterity at Human Resource Management; Maturing Born-Global Knowledge Intensive Firms at Management International Review; Emotions, Culture, and Stress in the Interorganizational Encounters at International Business Review; and others. He was granted the 2010 Outstanding Author Contribution Award by Emerald Publishing. His consulting experience includes biotechnological and telecom companies, as well as industry associations such as The Israeli Rubber and Plastic Industry Association and The U.S.–Israel Chamber of Commerce.

Christina �berg, Ph.D. is an associate professor at the Department of Industrial Management and Logistics, Lund University. She currently conducts research at the Centre for Innovation and Service Research, University of Exeter. She received her Ph.D. in industrial marketing from Link�ping University. She has an industry background in which she held such positions as financial manager and head accountant. Her research interests include mergers and acquisitions, brands and identities, customer relationships, and innovation management. Very good

It is a rarity to read a very well written book on M&As, especially something with new info. This is very easy to read if you are a beginner when it comes to M&As, especially if interested in the people side of deals. I like the more pragmatic approach when discussing cultural clash and due diligence, leadership and HR issues (not the usual empty theories). I enjoyed the chapter on trust, an element that is very often neglected.

If you are looking for THE M&A book I strongly suggest Creating Value From M&As (a masterpiece on this topic). If you are looking for a more pragmatic angle on the people side of M&As this could be a good choice - it is not a truly complete guide but it offers great pragmatic advice. If like me you are an experienced M&As practitioner this book is not grounbreaking, just a nice to have.

About the Author
Thich Nhat Hanh is one of the most revered Zen teachers in the world today. His best-selling books include Happiness and Peace Is Every Step. He lives in Plum Village in southwest France, where he teaches the art of mindful living.

Illustrator Wietske Vriezen was born in Wassenaar, The Netherlands. She met Thich Nhat Hanh during a retreat in Holland in 2000 and was touched deeply by his mindfulness teachings and practices. Since then, she has illustrated a number of books based on the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, most recently Planting Seeds and Mindful Movements. She lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands where she works as a psychologist with gifted children.

The most useful business book I've ever read

Adner's work is both richly insightful and easy to grasp. The cases are vivid and tools applicable to a wide audience - general managers, product managers, founders, business school students, C-suite executives and everyone in between. I found the three-part structure of the book to be extremely useful and thought it enhanced my level of learning by clearly and systematically building upon the earlier concepts presented - developing a very valuable toolbox of relevant examples and frameworks along the way.

The first section introduces the inherent challenge of innovating within innovation ecosystems (which exist in every industry once you learn how to spot them) and makes explicitly clear the hazard that co-innovation and adoption chain risks pose to even the most well-funded and highly skilled organizations (the Michelin run-flat debacle and Nokia's epic 3G failure are especially illuminating). He proves the point that in today's business environment, listening to customers and flawless execution are not enough - these are necessary but in no way sufficient. In the second section, Adner presents a bold assessment of how, when, and where to compete in order to maximize one's likelihood of success - including a brilliant discussion of how to spot when first-mover advantage is a benefit and when it's a curse via the First-Mover Matrix. In the final section, a clear blueprint is presented to teach managers how to think about ecosystem reconfiguration and steps for shaping ecosystems in order to eliminate a firm's innovation blind spots and prevent avoidable failures.

This book offers an exceptional framework with which to view innovations in today's markets, through the lens of ecosystems, where your individual execution success is but one piece of a larger puzzle. Besides offering illuminating example cases and excellent analysis of failures and successes, it provides a handful of very applicable tools for thinking about and identifying the challenges you'll face. Great focus on a typically overlooked yet hugely important aspect of business strategy, highly recommend.

A Holistic Look at Innovation Ecosystems

Why do many innovations fail? It is a question that baffles the best of us and keeps many a corporate executive awake at night. This anxiety is not unwarranted. Despite having a brilliant idea based on true customer insight and needs implemented with flawless execution, many innovations simply fail to meet the expectations set of them by their creators and by the market for which they were created. The Wide Lens by Ron Adner is a must read to gain insight into why that might be the case. In his thought provoking book, Adner explains how most innovation initiatives focus solely on managing the "execution" risk i.e. ensuring that a valid customer need exists, vetting the idea, and ensuring appropriate leadership and implementation. Adner explains that this "narrow lens" view is a root cause of why these innovators are blind sighted by failure. A "wide lens" view reveals two other major risks that need to be mitigated for success:

1. Co-innovation Risk - This risk represents the extent to which the successful commercialization of an innovation depends on the successful commercialization of other innovations.
2. Adoption Chain Risk - This risk represents the extent to which partners and others will need to adopt the innovation before the end customer can reap the full benefit of the value proposition.

Adner illustrates these risks very clearly in explaining how Michelin's big innovation in tires - the PAX System, which was designed to run for 125 miles after a blowout - failed to take off, despite the backing of major automakers, because the company failed to foresee the need for a robust network of service centers to repair these run-flat tires before going to market. The inability to service PAX tires and the resulting additional expenses incurred by consumers who had to buy new tires led to mass consumer backlash and even lawsuits that ultimately turned automakers off of these truly innovative tires. The PAX system falied because Michelin had failed to mitigate the adoption chain risk.

As Adner explains, co-innovation and adoption chain risks lurk in the blind spots of traditional strategy. They remain dormant as long as an innovation follows established lines (such as Michelin's successful introduction of Radial tires in the 1946). However, as soon as an innovation goes beyond being incremental in nature (such as the PAX tires), ecosystem challenges arise, which can only be addressed with a wide angle lens.

History is replete with examples of innovation failures that occurred despite brilliant execution. Nokia spent millions to be first to market with a 3G handset, but failed to profit because critical partners in its ecosystem did not complete their innovations in time. By the time customized video streaming, location based services, and automated payment systems were finally ready, so was the competition. Phillips suffered a similar fate as it tried to introduce HDTVs in the 1980s. And we are observing a similar dynamic with 3D TVs today. All of these are examples of failures stemming from the lack of "co-innovations" that need to happen for consumers to be able to realize the full benefits of an innovation's value proposition.

The Michelin story above illustrated an innovation's failure due to non adoption by a critical player in the ecosystem. Pfizer's suffered a similar disastrous fate with its miraculous inhalable insulin, Exubera, which was approved by the FDA, hailed by Wall Street analysts, and launched with huge fanfare. The $2.8 billion write-off, widely acknowledged as one of the biggest failures in the history of the pharmaceutical industry, can be traced directly to endocrinologists not embracing the requirement of lung function testing imposed by the FDA.

Contrast the above examples of failure with two innovations that have been successful. Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) is an example of a consortium of movie studios coming together in a unique way to overcome the cost of adopting digital film within the theater value chain. In essence, they subsidized and shared the cost of capital investment in smaller theater chains to ensure that digital film would enjoy the broad distribution and availability critical to its growth. It was a direct result of this innovation that director James Cameron was able to regale us with his 2009 blockbuster movie "Avatar". Amazon's success in the e-reader market with its Kindle product is also an example where Amazon overcame publisher reluctance by subsidizing their participation in addition to robust digital rights management both of which Sony was unable to accomplish and therefore failed despite having a technically superior e-reader.

Finally, Adner provides insight into a topic that is near and dear to my heart - "The First Mover Advantage." In my recent book, Living in the Innovation Age, I talk about the fallacy of thinking that "only the first to market" reaps the benefits of innovation. Rather, there are many cases of second, third, and subsequent movers being successful where the first mover failed. Adner sheds further light on this matter by presenting a framework that one can use to determine whether they should even try to be the "first mover". Per this framework, it only pays to be the first mover if your innovation has very little dependency on the ecosystem. The more complex your innovation becomes and the more it depends on co-innovations and adoption, the less beneficial it is to be a first mover (i.e. the risk of moving first goes up significantly). In such cases, it is much more prudent to be a smart mover as Amazon was with its Kindle and Apple was with its iPod.

The Bottom Line
I highly recommend The Wide Lens to anyone involved in innovation strategies, commercialization and new business development. Its unique approach to analyzing that factors that contribute to the success and failure of complex innovations and the supporting tools (value blueprints, leadership prism, first mover matrix, supply chain reconfiguration levers, and minimum value footprint) are sure to, as Adner summarizes in his last chapter, "multiply your odds of success."

In fact, reading Le Guin again may cause the eye to narrow somewhat disapprovingly at the younger generation: what new ground are they breaking that is not already explored here with greater skill and acumen? It cannot be said, however, that this is a rollicking good story. Le Guin takes a lot of time to explore her characters, the world of her creation, and the philosophical themes that arise.

If there were a canon of classic science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness would be included without debate. Certainly, no science fiction bookshelf may be said to be complete without it. But the real question: is it fun to read? It is science fiction of an earlier time, a time that has not worn particularly well in the genre. The Left Hand of Darkness was a groundbreaking book in 1969, a time when, like the rest of the arts, science fiction was awakening to new dimensions in both society and literature. But the first excursions out of the pulp tradition are sometimes difficult to reread with much enjoyment. Rereading The Left Hand of Darkness, decades after its publication, one feels that those who chose it for the Hugo and Nebula awards were right to do so, for it truly does stand out as one of the great books of that era. It is immensely rich in timeless wisdom and insight.

The Left Hand of Darkness is science fiction for the thinking reader, and should be read attentively in order to properly savor the depth of insight and the subtleties of plot and character. It is one of those pleasures that requires a little investment at the beginning, but pays back tenfold with the joy of raw imagination that resonates through the subsequent 30 years of science fiction storytelling. Superb

This book is a classic so there is really nothing I can say that others have not already said, and better. It is science fiction that addresses the social consequences of contact between people from different planets rather than fixating on technology and the things that can go wrong. It is a great story with wonderful characters and descriptions of imagined worlds. It addresses the issues of sex and gender by imagining how a person from a world with two biological sexes would interact in a world where everyone is both sexes at once. The issue is not desire and the sex act, but rather how our social perceptions, interactions and expectations are shaped in rather profound ways by our ideas about gender. This is not the main point of the book but rather part of the rich social and philosophical landscape where the action takes place. I had been meaning to read this for years and am now a devoted Le Guin fan. I really think this might have made it into my top 20 favorite books.

No robots. No lasers. No problem!

Ursula K Le Guin. I had heard the name many times growing up. It was always spoken with respect by people who held my respect. And yet, for all of that I had not read her work until now. I wonder how different my life would have been if I had read her work sooner. I'll never know.

This book is, at its simplest and least descriptive, a thought experiment. What if there were a world where gender as we know it did not exist.

But that is not the half of it. It is not even close.

This book examines how nationalism can be wonderful and yet poisonous. It compares the societies of differing nation-states. It looks at humanity's role in nature. It stares unflinchingly at love in various forms and in the end, the reader has gone through a journey nearly as transformative as the one taken by our protagonist, Genly Ai.

My only true complaint stems from the idea that Genly's gender biases are so strong that he consistently labels the Gethenians as he despite having been briefed of their genderless status before beginning the assignment.

Still ignoring the pronoun confusion, this was an amazing book. It is thoughtful and thought provoking. It is wise and wonderful. And though a world as cold as Winter sounds like my own personal hell, I will revisit the characters again with pleasure.

Original, intelligent, sophisticated science fiction

This was a book I always meant to read, having seen only praise for the writing and plot. It did not disappoint.
What a fantastic concept! UKLG has created a wondrous, fully fleshed out alien world. Its inhabitants see themselves as normal and humans as the aberrations – stuck their entire lives in a single, pre-defined sex.
The story is told through the eyes of two protagonists: a human ambassador and a Gethenian politician. Both are intricate, well developed characters. The story is so well formulated that at the end, you view the human as the alien that he is, and the Gethenians as the normal ones.
This book was written several decades ago, and it shows: sentences are thoughtful and well phrased, and there is a lack of the grammatical and spelling errors which deplorably seem to be so rampant in modern works.
I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy original, intelligent, sophisticated science fiction. I would not recommend it if you are simply looking for fast bang-bang action.

David Welch is Professor of Modern History and Director of the Centre for the Study of Propaganda at the University of Kent at Canterbury. He is editor of the Routledge Sources in History series. His previous publications include The Third Reich: Politics and Propaganda (Routledge, 1993) and Hitler (UCL Press, 1998).
