About the Author
Professors Lila J. Truett and Dale B. Truett teach managerial economics and a number of other economics courses at The University of Texas at San Antonio. Lila Truett (Ph.D., University of Iowa) served an unusually long tenure as Director of the Division of Economics and Finance at UTSA and has also served on the Governing Board of the Southern Economic Association. Dale Truett received his Ph.D. form the University of Texas at Austin and has served as an academic administrator both at UTSA and at Florida International University, where he was founding chairman of the Department of Economics. From 1997 - 2002 he held an Ashbel Smith Professorship, the highest distinction for schlorship and research at UTSA. The Truetts have a great deal of consulting experience, including work with a number of Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 firms.

Informative!

This book is really not as bad as people make it out to be. Its not amazing, but it doesn't deserve all the terrible feedback either. It includes important concepts such as profit maximization, economic forecasting and many more important topics that a business person should be familiar with. At first it was hard for me to understand the book, but its one of those things that comes to you as you read more and more and voilà all of a sudden you feel enlightened. At my University we are doing the calculus part of the problems not the stats, but I imagine stat problems are just as good. If you do not know calculus I highly recommend studying it before you look at this book.

I personally had the honor to take Professor Dale Truett's class in managerial economics. Although Dr. Truett knows far more than the average scholar of economics, it is best he sticks to the real thing, rather than trying to write a book about it. It is one of the hardest texts I have ever had to read...

A Bad Textbook

I am currently taking a MBA class and this text book is being used. In just a few weeks I find this worst textbook I have ever used. The explanations to concepts are unclear. There are very few examples utilizing the concepts. Many of the answers to problems are incorrect to the point our teacher list the errors when assigning the homework. The study guide is of no help since it does not even explain how to do the problems. There has to be some other text out there that is better than this one.

Has lots of good tips with great examples

[[VIDEOID:39093261]]The approach covered is primarily concerned with the use of line, development of form, and the simplified design of anatomy. It doesn't go into contour drawing, shading and expression.

The many illustrated examples are aimed at helping students develop a feel for the form and volume of figures they draw. To that aspect, I think it does a very good job.

The use of simple geometric shapes as drawing guides are simple to understand. Not only that, Michael Hampton also builds onto to those simplified mannequins with lots of clearly illustrated muscles. The muscle groups are visualised very distinctly in the examples. They are colour-coded to bring attention those that affect form when the body is in different positions.

I like the part on finding landmarks -- bones that are near the skin. Colour-coded and shown very clearly, with rotating views from front to back.

The book does have head drawing but the focus is on the form rather than the details of the features, although the examples do show the details. It still covers enough for for anyone to draw a decent head.

One thing that's missing is the mention of figure proportions, like how many heads tall a body, length of an arm, etc. That I think will complete the book. There's nothing on bones and you won't learn how muscle works, but this isn't an anatomy reference book. That said, having an anatomy reference book to go along will be extremely helpful.

This is a useful book for artists learning to create and pose their own figures. Highly recommend for beginner and intermediate artists.

This will become your favorite figure drawing book

I read the first chapter of this book and took an online class by Michael Hampton. I really wanted to read further into the book, and I'm so glad I got it. This book will fast become a classic in figure drawing right along with Andrew Loomis.
First, the book is broken down into gesture drawing and landmarks of the body. This will help you structure the skeleton and will get you familiar with where the muscle masses will go later. Most importantly, gesture drawing will help you pose the body in a dynamic and natural way. The gesture is the best way to get more interesting drawings and the breakdowns in the book are easy to follow and easy to complete.
The book moves on to the structure of the head and how to detail the features. With these three parts, the body is complete, and you will walk away knowing where to place everything. Then it details the features of the body like the arms, legs, hands, and feet. The instruction ends with understanding how fabric works on the body and how to use light and shade.

The book has colorful and detailed illustrations and examples. The book is broken down in such a way that it will be easy to come back to sections and use those sections as reference.

My only complaint is that it took me so long to add this book to my collection.

The recipes look so good and delicious! I am not a nutritionist but mine told me that veggies and fruits are a great addition to my diet especially since I am trying to lose a lot of weight and change my current lifestyle. I always used to head to the nearest fast food joint whenever I was hungry but hopefully I can finally kick the habit!

Primary Phonics - Awesome!!

Primary Phonics is an awesome learning tool for reading. My daughter first used these books at her Montessori preschool & was reading at age 4. I purchased the set online to encourage her to read over summer break & she absolutely loves them. I just ordered the next set - set 2 and the workbooks. I can't wait to get them and start using them with her. These books are definetly worth the money.

Primary Phonics Series

This series is very good for beginning readers. It starts with one syllable short vowel sound words, and expands in sequential order up through long vowel sounds and eventually multi-syllable words. I've used it to help tutor. I don't give it five stars because it's not perfect, but it's very good.

Clearly not for everyone... Perfect for us.

When it comes to my wife and her health, the words "neurotic" and "obsessive" come to mind. She gets on WebMD every time she has so much as a sniffle, and has convinced herself that she has everything from cancer to SARS to a brain tumor.

My wife and I found out we were pregnant for the first time just a few days ago. So, as soon as we were prepared to deal with it, we headed to the bookstore and found this title. Within the first three chapters, the authors had addressed fears ranging from the biggest general health issues, to the tests which are available and why you may or may not want them (answering the question for her, "I'm 34 years old, why won't they give me an amniocentesis?"), to how to tell a close friend who has been trying (hard) to get pregnant for some time that this "just sorta happened" for us. It's like the authors were inside her head.

Every parent should be fully aware of the risks involved in pregnancy. Bad things do happen, and we all know someone (or know someone who knows someone) to whom the worst possible things have happened. But many of us need the encouragement of someone authoritative who can remind us that these things are rare exceptions, and that there are some things you can control and some things you can't. "Instead of obsessing about your pregnancy," the authors remind us, "consider obsessing over parenting. That situation lasts longer, and the payoff for being prepared will likely be greater."

Many of the critics of this book seem to be response to the premise of the title. Of course there is no such thing as a "fearless pregnancy" -- if one were to read as far as the first page of the book, one would find that the authors agree:

"The key is that the fear must be valid, and it must be used properly -- to inquire, explore, and act wisely."

By no means do I believe that this book is intended to be a comprehensive reference. Perhaps the book's subtitle more accurately reflects its content: "Wisdom and Reassurance From a Doctor, a Midwife and a Mom."

It's perfect for us because this is our first pregnancy, and it will not be the only pregnancy book on our shelves. It is true that this book does not address the devastating realities for those families who have experienced loss or complication (but by no means does it attempt to diminish or dismiss these experiences, either). If you have previously experienced a difficult pregnancy or loss, this book will most likely not address your fears about getting pregnant again.

Nonetheless, for anyone simply trying to get a grip on what can be one of the scariest things to happen to you for the first time, we highly recommend this book.

I would recommend this book to anyone experiencing their first pregnancy. I don't believe in one book for all purposes, but this book filled a void left by so many of the books I've been reading. I am fortunate to be in the early stages of a relatively easy pregnancy. However, no pregnancy is "easy" as there are so many issues that a woman faces as she undergoes the transition to mother. I hesitated to read this book because I thought "fear" sounded so silly...what's there to be afraid of? Then I realized as I read the first few chapters that I have been afraid of so many of the emotional changes I'm undergoing. This is the first book I've read that addresses a pregnant woman's emotions in a thoughtful, mature way.

So much of the advice we are given while pregnant is "fear-based" and you start to operate with this sense that all things that are potential dangers rate a 10 on the risk scale. They don't. This book lends some sanity to that assumption and reminds us that as intelligent women, with a little care and mindfulness, we will do just fine. I won't waste my time reading the books that spend hours discussing things that probably won't happen and then worrying about them as though they will. I will do my research if and when they arise so I can make informed decisions. I will invest my time instead talking through the emotional changes that I am facing with my husband so that he understands them and me, and we can get through this change together as a team.

Great for worriers!

This is my favorite pregnancy book that I've read so far--and I've read quite a few. So many of the other books frightened me with all the things that could go wrong, even though those things are very rare. There's so much fear-mongering in the media these days, and with other pregnancy books, that this book was a delight and a comfort!
