About the Author

James A. Johnson, professor of education at Northern Illinois University, has been an educator for more than 35 years, serving as a public school teacher, teacher educator, university administrator, researcher, national/international consultant and speaker, and strong education advocate. He is a life member of, and active participant in, many professional associations, and has been the lead author of all editions of the widely popular Foundations of Education textbook, as well as the author or co-author of a dozen other college textbooks and scores of professional articles in various professional journals.

Diann Musial is a professor emerita in the Foundations of Education and Northern Illinois University Distinguished Teaching professor. Currently, she is field coordinator for educational internships with Great Basin College and a member of Research and Doctoral Processes with Capella University. Diann has taught middle school science and mathematics in Chicago Illinois, served as principal of an Individually Guided Education elementary school and worked in industry as director of training. She has directed more than 20 state and federally funded staff development grants, developed countless performance assessments and test item banks, coauthored Integrating Science with Mathematics and Literacy: New Visions for Learning and Assessment and Foundations for Meaningful Educational Assessment.

Gene E. Hall began his academic career as a faculty team member at the national R&D Center for Teacher Education, The University of Texas at Austin. The faculty team was charged with developing an experimental teacher education program, called the Personalized Teacher Education Program. Following more than a decade at UTA he became a faculty member at the University of Florida, then the University of Northern Colorado, and currently University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has twice served as the Dean of a College of Education. His research has always centered on studies of the change process in schools and business settings. He is the lead architect of the Concerns Based Adoption Model (CBAM), which is one of the major perspectives for understanding, facilitating and evaluating change initiatives. He also has a continuing role nationally in regard to national accreditation of teacher education. He is co-author of several books on introduction to teaching and on implementing change.

Donna M. Gollnick is an education consultant to the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. She previously served as Consultant and Senior Vice President for the National Council for Accreditation in Teacher Education (NCATE). She has been writing about multicultural education for the past 35 years. She is the co-author with Philip Chinn of the textbook, Multicultural Education in a Pluralistic Society (Allyn & Bacon, 9th edition, 2013). She is a co-author of Joy of Teaching, an introductory textbook for students preparing to teach that was first published in 2007. She contributed to the 1995 Handbook on Research in Multicultural Education, which was co-edited by James A. Banks and Cherry C. A. Banks. She has contributed chapters and articles on cultural diversity and teacher education to numerous publications. Donna is a past president of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) and has received Distinguished Alumni Awards from Purdue University and the University of Southern California. She was also honored by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) as an “Advocate for Justice.”

I rented an etextbook for a undergrad class. I could read it on the kindle app on my phone and computer which was nice. It couldn't be used on my paperwhite which is the reason I bought it in the first place, but I improvised. There were options to highlight lines and make flashcards if needed. Everything is nice and vibrant and organized neatly. It will give you those 'yep this is a school textbook' feels when opening to the first page. The writers tended to try and be more PC and pander to all types of people and situations while being polite about it all. The writers also tend to aim the examples only toward the primary level. If you are interested in teaching other areas you might want to find another text book. Over all, this was a good starting text book.

A VERY HELPFUL TOOL.

This review is on the 2010 edition published by Fall River Press.

As with my birding, a passion of mine for over 50 years now, where I carry more than one field guide with me when I am out and about, the same hold true for butterflying. I use Kaufman's guide and I use the one being reviewed here. I don't think that any one single guide is adequate when watching or studying wildlife and to be frank, I get a bit annoyed when I cannot identify a group or species.

There are over 600 known butterflies that make their home in the lower 48 states. This book goes far in giving you the ability to identify a great many of them.

Now this is important! This work will not cover each and every single species and subspecies of butterflies you are likely to encounter, it will cover all of the major ones and it most certainly gives you a good representation of all of the known groups. In the author's words:

"Because many of the six hundred species fund in the Lower 48 states of the United States are very similar to one another, the approach I have taken in this book, with many of these groups, is to allow you to identify an unknown butterfly to group, rather than to species."

"If after experience, you decide that you would like to identify butterflies to specific species, even in difficult groups, then you can use my `Butterflies through Binoculars' series to do so."

Now I am not a lister...yet, so I find this approach quite workable for what I want. I spend a lot of time photographing these creatures and once I make general field notes, get a good shot, then it is easy enough to check specific species...difficult though in many cases if you are not an expert.

I find the photographs in this work to be clear and quite concise. They leave little guess work. They are of excellent quality and composition. The text is quite readable and addresses host plants, something I find invaluable. The author has given us some pretty good range maps and a wonderful introduction to the world of butterflying.

While this may not be the ultimate butterfly book, it is most certainly a good tool and I would hate to work in the field without it.

Butterfly groups, not species

This is really a guide to groups of butterflies, not species. Not all species are pictured, but characteristics of groups (e.g. elfins, coppers, buckeyes, small satyrs) are described. Each group gets 2 pages, one of which is usually taken up by a full page photo. There are 2-4 photos per group, plus a range map. The half page of text lists sizes, characteristics, habitats, food plants, gardening suggestions, abundance and sometimes miscellaneous bits -- each for the group as a whole. No scientific names are used, although a list is given at the back of the book.
There are introductory chapters on butterfly biology and conservation.
PROs: lovely photographs, gives a sense of the groups
CONs: not useful if you wish to know exactly which of the species you have.

Beautifully illustrated (but not all species). Clearly written. Nicely organized by major groups. A good companion to Caterpillars in the Field and Garden by Allen et al.

As someone who is highly interested in all things regarding PUA and who has read quite a few books on the subject I would encourage not waist your time on this piece of crap book! Although you are promised to learn about hypnotism in this book you do not. After reading through all of the BS the author spouts off about you are given a plug for a book that you can write the author for on how to hypnotize women. The first chapters until then are information encouraging you to use dating service and adds for sex. You are told all of the places that you can find hookers in England and how you can wait in public restrooms and watch guys pee until you see one glance at you who is willing to get you off in the stall. This guy gives a bad name pick up artists and is why most people are unwilling to listen to anything related to the topic. This guy is not a pick up artist as much as he is a pervert who should be locked up for half of the crap he pulls. If you want to be a giant doosher then read this book and you will be on your way to being locked up as a sexual offender!

About the Author
Dr. Richard P. DuFour was a public school educator for 34 years, serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. He served as the principal of Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois from 1983 1991 and as superintendent of the district from 1991 2002. During his tenure, Stevenson became what the United States Department of Education has described as the most recognized and celebrated school in America. Dr. DuFour is the author of eight books and more than 40 professional articles, and for almost a decade, a quarterly column for the Journal of Staff Development. He was the lead consultant and author for the ASCD s seven-part video series on principalship and is the author of two other videos, How to Build a Professional Learning Community and Through New Eyes: Examining the Culture of Your School. He was the first principal in Illinois to receive the Distinguished Educator award, the state s highest honor as both principal and superintendent; was named one of the top 100 school administrators in North America by Executive Educator magazine; was presented the Distinguished Scholar Practitioner award from the University of Illinois; and was the 2004 recipient of the National Staff Development Council s Distinguished Service award. He consults with school districts, state departments of education, and professional organizations throughout North America on strategies for improving schools. Dr. Robert Eaker, Ed.D., is the former executive vice president and provost at Middle Tennessee State University and former fellow with the National Center for Effective Schools Research and Development. Dr. Eaker has written widely on the issues of effective teaching, effective schools, helping teachers use research findings, and high expectations for student achievement. Dr. Eaker has spoken at numerous national meetings held by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and National Center for Effective Schools Research and Development. He was also chosen by Phi Delta Kappa for the People in Educational Evaluation and Research interview series. He regularly consults with school districts throughout the nation regarding school improvement issues with content that is grounded in current research and that also addresses the concerns and problems of contemporary school practitioners. Drs. Eaker and DuFour co-authored Creating the New American School: A Principal s Guide to School Improvement and Whatever It Takes: How Professional Learning Communities Respond When Kids Don t Learn (with Rebecca DuFour and Gayle Karhanek). Their book, Getting Started: Reculturing Schools to Become Professional Learning Communities, co-authored with Rebecca DuFour, has sold over 53,000 copies since its release in March 2002. Drs. Eaker and DuFour are also co-editors of On Common Ground: The Power of Professional Learning Communities, a collection of essays by leading educational authors and consultants.

An excellent book written by one of the most important educators in relation to Professional Learning Communities. So many educators, start the year and barricade themselves inside their rooms and have little or no contact with other teachers. This book gives new and veteran teachers alike the basics of why to use the PLC, as well as how to set up the Professional Learning Community to benefit all teachers. And better teaching will have a positive impact on classroom instruction and student learning. This book is a must have for today's teachers.
