About the Author
Richard A. Spencer is a professor of classics and biblical studies at Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina. A Protestant minister for 46 years, he has published commentaries on the New Testament and apocryphal books and written for many religious publications.

Accessible, but Still a Textbook

Although light in tone, Spencer's book is firmly a textbook. This I did not know when I requested it. That made it more challenging for me to read, but also envious of those with the chance to take college courses in Harry Potter. With obvious enthusiasm, Spencer dives into a detailed description on the motifs and themes of the Greek and Roman classics. To start, he explains in his introduction why he only included Greek and Roman classics (as opposed to biblical or near east), why he only consulted the seven books and not the additional material like interviews and Pottermore, and why he thinks Rowling’s use of mythology is important. From there, he moves into exploring the three main characters, as he sees them – Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore, and Lord Voldemort. He then writes about Major and Supporting Characters, Magical Beings and Materials, and the Classical Languages used in Harry Potter.
While his knowledge of Harry Potter and Greco-Roman mythology is extensive, I’m not sure there is quite enough for the whole book. Several times, particular in the chapters on Beings and Material and Supporting Characters, it seemed he was stretching a bit to find the connection. Or, assuming Rowling meant more by the name that she really may have (although, he states in the beginning he doesn’t claim to know her mind or motives, and so, he may be right.). I found his Appendix on the “Ring Composition” of Rowling’s work to be most enlightening. Rowling has been called a literary genius for her use of that literary device and Spencer’s appendix makes it clear how deeply woven into the narrative this device is.
While I’m not sure this book would appeal to your average Harry Potter fan, it will appeal to your diehard or academically-minded. And for anyone who also enjoys Greco-Roman mythology, this is a must-read. Spencer’s tone is jovial and accessible, if somewhat repetitive, and although it reads like a textbook, it’s not overly complicated or difficult. I recommend as a fine addition to the library of any Harry Potter fan.

Peltier, a Sioux Indian, has been in federal prison since 1977, convicted of killing two FBI agents during the 1973 siege at Wounded Knee, S.D. Peltier asserts that he did not commit these murders, writing simply, Innocence has a single voice that can only say over and over, I didnt do it. Guilt has a thousand voices, all of them lies. HUNDREDS OF INDIANS KILLED- MEN,WOMEN,CHILDREN,BABIES . AND, WE KNEW IF THAT REZ WASN'T SITTING ON ONE OF THE LARGEST URANIUM DEPOSITS IN THE U.S., THEY COULD HAVE LIVED IN PEACE.
THEN 2 CIA AGENTS GET KILLED, MAYBE BY THEIR OWN OPERATIVES. THREE INDIANS CHARGED..JURY IN IOWA FOUND TWO INNOCENT OF ALL CHARGES. Leonard Peltier: He Didn't Do It! Read his story and send a Petition to the President for a Presidential Pardon!

There is NO doubt whatsoever, that Leonard Peltier has been imprisoned falsely. Even A District Court Judge who reviewed the evidence several yrs ago, ruled that the evidence against him didn't hold up, circumstantial AND contrived. It is within the power of the President to give Leonard Peltier a Presidenntial pardon. There is a Petition online that one can sign and send to Obama. Whether or not it will do any good remains to be seen. This is a travesty and Justice was denied AND continues to be. He's in his 70's and ill. He needs to be released NOW and should have been decades ago because He Did Not Kill the two Agents. From what can be learned from reading in Peltier's own words (as the man who was there!) it is even more possible that the two agents were killed by what the military calls "friendly fire," but rather than own up, they pinned the deaths on the man they most wanted imprisoned: Leonard Peltier, and they got away with it.

Free Leonard Peltier, political prisoner for a crime he didn't commit!!!!

I cannot emphasize enough that what we, as a nation, have done in the name of, so-called, progress is atrocious and abominable. I mean we decry what other countries do in terms of policies and prisoners, but when it comes to our own national priorities, we can do no wrongs. Unfortunately as this book exquisitely expresses, we're no better than, say, South Africa during apartheid. We just dress it up in different terms and don't even acknowledge such when it goes on, despite the many attempts to open up our shadowy government policies to civilian viewing and oversight. Everyone should read this book, in my opinion, because it underscores the gross negligence of the US government toward the native peoples of this country.

About the Author

M.R. Haberfeld is a Professor of Police Science in the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. She was born in Poland and immigrated to Israel as a teenager. Prior to coming to John Jay, she served in Israeli Defense Forces, in a counter-terrorist unit and left the army at the rank of a Sergeant; she then joined the Israel National Police, and left the force at the rank of Lieutenant. She also worked for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, in the New York Field Office, as a special consultant. She holds two Bachelor of Art degrees, two Master degrees, and a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice. Her main interests and expertise are in the area of police training and professional development, with particular emphasis on: police ethics, integrity, leadership, counter-terrorism and use of force in multicultural environments. Her recent publications include a book on police training, titled Critical Issues in Police Training (2002), a co-edited book titled Contours of Police Integrity (2004) Encyclopedia of Law Enforcement, the International Volume (2005) Police Leadership (2005), a co-authored book titled Enhancing Police Integrity (2006) and a co-edited book on Comparative Policing: The Struggle for Democratization (2007). She is currently completing a co-edited book, A New Understanding of Terrorism: Case Studies and Analysis (forthcoming fall, 2008). She also recently co-authored two articles on counter-terrorist response: "Proper Proactive Training to Terrorist Presence and Operations in Friendly Urban Environments", in Understanding and Responding to the Terrorism Phenomenon – A Multi-Dimensional Perspective (2007) and "Police Activities to Counter Terrorism: What We Know and What We Need to Know" (forthcoming Fall, 2008). For the past seven years (2001-2008), she has been involved in developing, coordinating and teaching in a special training program for the New York City Police Department, where she teaches courses in police ethics, leadership and counter-terrorism. Currently, she is also an Academic Coordinator of the Law Enforcement Executive Police Institute for the State of New York, where she oversees the delivery of the training modules and teaches leadership courses. She is involved in two major research studies, one on Use of Force by the Police in 10 different countries, and the other Counter-Terrorism police training response post 9/11, which also involves comparative studies of a number of countries around the world.

Dr. Joseph King received his Ph.D. from CUNY. His doctoral dissertation was on the history, development and centralization of the police in the United Kingdom and the United States. He served for 33 years as the Supervisory Special Agent in Charge of the Terrorist and Middle East Division, US Customs, NY and 2 years as Chief, National Security Section, DHS, NY. He has extensive Criminal Investigative, Undercover, and Court testimonial experience in the European Union and the Middle East. He joined John Jay College in September, 2003 in the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration. Charles Lieberman is a full-time substitute lecturer in the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. He served in the NYPD, with more than 11 years assigned to investigative duties. During his time as a member of NYPD, he was involved in the response to numerous significant events, including both attacks on the World Trade Center (1993, 2001) and the anthrax incident at Rockefeller Center. Charles served as an undercover operative in the NYPD for more than 3 years, and in 1995, trained with the Metropolitan Police in London, participating in their Specialist Operations Training Course, which involved long-term undercover operations. For the last 10 years of his career, he worked in various communities in NYC as a detective, investigating all types of criminal activity, including homicide, robbery, burglary, narcotics, kidnapping, and "white-collar" crime. In 2005, after 15 years, he retired as a detective and entered academia. In 2004, he entered the Criminal Justice Doctoral Program at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center (GC) and is ABD. He is currently completing his dissertation thesis focuses on the role local communities in the United States can and should play in combating the home-grown terrorist activities. He is expected to defend his dissertation in the Fall of 2008.

One of the best books on terrorism

This book covers up to date data on recent terrorism attacks and historic. This book analyzes policies and practices of counter terrorism in different parts of the world. It is loaded with informative and interesting information. Once I picked this book up I could not put it down! It is very different then the average terrorism book, because it describes the research results from the experience of the researchers. I love this book and I would recommend it. My only compliant is that it is expensive, but it is worth it!! I read this book twice!

Treating six different studio recordings in depth--ESP, Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, Miles in the Sky, and Filles de Kilimanjaro--Waters has tracked down a host of references to and explications of Davis' work. His analysis takes into account contemporary reviews of the recordings, interviews with the five musicians, and relevant larger-scale cultural studies of the era, as well as two previously unexplored sources: the studio outtakes and Wayne Shorter's Library of Congress composition deposits. Only recently made available, the outtakes throw the master takes into relief, revealing how the musicians and producer organized and edited the material to craft a unified artistic statement for each of these albums. The author's research into the Shorter archives proves to be of even broader significance and interest, as Waters is able now to demonstrate the composer's original conception of a given piece. Waters also points out errors in the notated versions of the canonical songs as they often appear in the main sources available to musicians and scholars. Essential for Serious Listeners

Chances are if you have made it this far you are already aquatinted with Miles' second quintet, and you are a musician with at least some knowledge in thoery. And that is really all it takes to appreciate this book! The author has renewed my fascination for this music and helped me hear things I had not previously realized, despite countless listens.

A Must Read For Those Who Love Miles Davis

This book is especially useful for musicians seeking some measure of understanding in the creative process and evolution of America's greatest cultural contribution to the world. The focus is on, in my opinion, the most intriguingly creative, consistently adventurous, and intrepid quintet Miles ever engaged in.

To read about the mechanics of creative processes in each of these most amazing musicians and how they coalesce into a single ever-changing musical entity with Miles navigating their journey into uncharted zones is insightful enough, but to then play the various tunes in the background or looped for closer comparison as you read about those tunes is an adventure.

It is technical and challenging to get through but, if you are really interested in getting inside the heads of these true geniuses, this is as close as it gets. It is a study in how five dynamic leaders, in their own rights, converged to make music history and magic that transcends time and space. I'm glad somebody took the time and effort to shine a light on this stellar quintet and the years they shone in the studio and in live performances during Miles Davis's incredible career!

Outstanding analysis

This is the best analysis I've seen of any of Miles's music so far. The author seems to have an excellent ear and superhuman diligence. It's not an easy book, but it's not an easy subject, and I've found my own persistence richly rewarded. To the limits of my understanding the musical transcriptions are completely accurate (a rare phenomenon, especially in light of the complexity of this music) and the author's reflections on them are consistently penetrating and enlightening, even if the language occasionally seems a bit academic for the subject matter. I suppose that's not unreasonable considering the likely audience. Besides, how else do you talk about this stuff, if you're going to talk about it at all? And I'm glad he's talking about it.

Thanks to this book I'm hearing new things in pieces I've been listening to for decades. Just one example: Wayne Shorter's "Iris" has a structure during the head that's augmented in the solo sections with the head structure appended at double speed, so that a solo chorus is 1-1/2 times the length of a head chorus. Shorter ends his solo, not where a solo chorus would end, but where the head would have ended, leaving Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter dangling. For the next several bars, they're not clear on whether they're starting over at the beginning of a new solo chorus or finishing the previous one first. I never realized this was happening, despite hundreds of listens, until I read this book.

What's even more remarkable, and a testimonial to the superb musicianship of the players in this group, is that it still sounds good anyway. And that's the ultimate value of this book for me, that the author's admirable scholarship is enlisted in the service of deepening our understanding and enjoyment of this magnificent ensemble.

One personal disappointment, but by no means a criticism, is that the author gives relatively little space to several of my favorite tunes, for example, "Eighty-One," "Footprints," and "Mood." I think that's not a coincidence, however: one big reason I like those songs so much is that they're relatively accessible (respectively, two blues progressions and a fairly simple form rigidly adhered to). As such, they're more easily understood and we thus might not benefit as much from the author's insights. Or you could say those tunes are just too easy for him.

A great resource

I'm a speech language pathologists and I do treat cognitive disorders like problems with attention, memory, problem solving and more. I also teach classes on cognitive strategies and Memory Booster Workout is my textbook of choice. It's very easy to read, has self evaluation tools, it's easy to understand and yet it's scientifically accurate. Very useful in daily life. A great book. I highly recommend it to anybody!
