Very useful for the main sights

Since it focusses on a couple of places extensively, with handy, informative city walks and lots of info about eating, sleeping and transportation, but skips entire parts of the Scandinavic countries, this guide is very good, and perhaps even more useful than the Lonely Planet, if you only visit those places described in the book and not the rest. Not all major destinations are listed, e.g. Trondheim and G�teborg are missing, hence my 4 out of 5 stars, but even with those cities missing I though it a very useful book. The city walks are excellent and somehow we often ended up in restaurants that were listed.
I bought the ebook version which was very convenient on both phone and tablet, the only disadvantage being that you have to browse quite a bit between the city walk maps and the (very informative) written description.

Absolutely Essential

I especially liked Steve's Norway in a Nutshell trip you can take on your own. We skipped the expensive, shorter excursion offered by the cruise ship and saved enough to pay for all of our tour books. We visited all of the Scandinavian countries and used this book before docking in each major city, as well as in Tallinn, Estonia. Warning: the book makes you want to go back for more!

My wife and I depart the first week in August for a Baltic Sea cruise aboard the Silver Whisper. Just found this new hard-cover book at B&N today. It has beautiful photos and information on many of the places we will be visiting. Not only are we enjoying it now and allowing to help our trip planning, but I can see it will be a book we will treasure for many years to come.

A good introductory read for students of biomechanics

This book would be best for a student in an introductory biomechanics class who has interest in its application to sport. An addition audience may be those interested in the topic, but want a text that is lighter on the math, or at least balances the tendency to recite derivations of formulae ad nauseum with concise interpretations of data. This is often what keeps people interested in the topic away. A particularly interesting part of the book is the author's explanation of how to use excel to model data, allowing the reader some "lab" time if they so desire. The book also covers the topics of aero- and hydrodynamics, something that many biomechanics texts either do not do or do poorly. I highly recommend this book to beginner and intermediate students of biomechanics, especially those interested in its application to sports rehabilitation or performance.

Very nice book - Strongly recommended!

This is a review I made for a class and I thought was perfect to share it.

Have you ever wondered how to improve your performance in a sport you practice? Do you want to improve your performance in the gym? What do you need in order to succeed in rugby, football or basketball? Why are some athletes better in Olympics than others? The answers to these questions and more are contained in this book.

Dr Blazevich presents the reader with useful and updated material about the biomechanics of sports in an easy-to-read format; it combines the technical concepts with general and real-world sports topics. The book introduces you to the world of biomechanics and also provides the basic details any sports coach must know.

This book contains 18 chapters covering topics such as: Position, Velocity and Acceleration; Conservation of Angular Momentum; Fluid Dynamics; Friction; and The Kinetic Chain. Every chapter begins with a catchy question that beckons the curious reader to continue reading to obtain the answers. All the chapters summarize the theorical information with graphic and mathematical data. The reading is facilitated by its use of plain vs. scientific language.

The book contains two outstanding final sections: Useful Equations, which contains various equations you will use in the chapter, and Related Websites, which directs the reader to interactive material on the web so as to expand upon the concepts learned in the book. The only problem is when access this material, reader needs type it into the computer--if one character is wrong you will get a URL error in your web browser.

In conclusion, I recommend this book as an introductory text for students of biomechanics, engineering and mathematics. This kind of students and people working in this field, developing a PhD thesis for example (as myself) will enjoy reading this book. However, is important to have some mechanics and mathematics background, e.g. the engineering background.

If you are in proficient in advanced math and have a passion for training athletes to improve their performance this is the perfect book for you. By page 3 I was already hooked and couldn't wait to see what else was in the coming chapters.

Outstanding, scholarly work for advanced Third Reich Collectors

Too often, in our hobby, authors write books--and we buy them--about topics we are already very familiar. In the realm of Third Reich collectibles, it is rare when a book appears that covers an area the collecting community has overlooked or misunderstands. When one of these books does make it into print, it can be truly ground-breaking by exposing a new facet of the hobby.

This is exactly what author Craig Gottlieb has accomplished with Gau Decorations of Hitler's Germany. While many Third Reich collectors are familiar with the term "Gau" (literally, "area"), most are hard-pressed to detail the purpose and hierarchy of the Gaue.

The general lack of understanding has caused many to overlook the significant badges worn by top Gau officials, or Gauleiter, often dismissing them as simply "tinnies."

Gottlieb has written a very insightful and easily understood outline of the Gau structure established by the Nazis in the 1920s. Following this, there is a discussion of the formation, leadership and--most importantly--the Gauleiter badge for each of the ten Gaus.

Often referred to as "tradition awards," these Gau badges ranked high enough to be authorized for wear instead of the Golden Party Badge! Indeed, even though there was no standardized ranking system, some Gau badges appeared in three grades, some were made from silver and others were numbered. Gottlieb makes sense of all these nuances.

It is a good book that multiplies our understanding and value of military relics. Gau Decorations of Hitler's Germany makes a solid impact on both fronts. The information is well-documented, the writing is intelligent and clear and the photos are pin-sharp and well-lit. Gau Decorations may not be a book for generalists, but advanced Third Reich collectors will be glad they added it to their library.

Brilliant for physics in audiology

I wish I'd had this book when I started my masters in audiology (NZ). It would have made my life so much easier! Of all the textbooks covering physics (including sound digitization and electronic circuitry) for student audiologists, this one stands head and shoulders above the rest. The authors designed the book to fill in gaps for audiology students who lack or need to brush up on the sciences required for postgrad audiology courses (particularly physics and maths). They certainly deliver on their promise of making complex concepts simple to understand without dumbing down the content. They talk though the mathematics step by step (wonderful for those of us who struggle with numbers) and even managed to demystify impedance for me - which, after months of struggling, I didn't think was possible. I'm not sure how it would be to read this book independently from a course, but it is so complete and self-explanatory, I imagine it would be fine. For anyone struggling in a physics for audiology course it is absolutely invaluable and could save you hours of frustration. Well worth the price.
