Bad presentation, good information, and more bad presentation.

Basically, the information this book contains is rendered inaccessible by the poor presentation.

Remember writing that paper where you needed more length, so you went back and reworded everything to be expressed in a more complicated way? That's this textbook. Sentences are needlessly long, making content more difficult to absorb. Word choices are fluttery and fanciful when they need to be brick-solid. The prose squanders my time and my attention.

Composition is bad. This book consistently names something I've never heard of, talks for a few paragraphs about it as though I know what it is, leads me to believe I've missed something and maybe I should go back and find it, and then finally defines the thing. Additionally, time after time something is brought up and then dismissed as being "beyond the scope of this text" or contained in proper detail in some other, future chapter (your princess is in another castle...).

Images are never anywhere near the point in the text that references them! Reading about figure X-X? Well, figure X-Y is directly adjacent to what you're reading, and X-X is two pages back. For an e-book this is impossible to deal with, and even for a physical copy this would be ridiculous.

And the jokes? Yes, it's got jokes. They aren't good. They aren't funny. They are meant to be a way of keeping the reader engaged, but they fall flat and they take up space I had hoped would contain useful information.

This textbook is awful. It contains mountains of good information, but the writing is so bad as to render the content inaccessible.

Dry and Very Technical

I bought this book for a course I was taking on DBMSs, and I found it to be extremely dry and difficult to read in terms of staying captivated - even for a textbook. I understand database management may not be the "coolest" thing to read about, but a good textbook will keep the reader engaged while teaching them something of value. However, the book did offer good knowledge about the basics of what a database is, its role in a business, how to cultivate one, and how to maintain one.

The only thing that threw me off was that the product picture said "International Edition," but nowhere in the product description did it suggest that it would be the international edition, so I made the assumption that the product photo was off. I ended up receiving an international edition, which I wasn't totally expecting just because the post didn't exclusively state that, and in my experience the seller states that up front. In terms of content, it wasn't vastly different, it would just have been nice to know beforehand since international editions are significantly cheaper than US editions and if I had known that I would have bought my international edition somewhere else that offered cheaper pricing.

If this book is necessary for a class (as was the case for me) then I feel for you. There are a lot of concepts discussed and while some of them can be a little confusing, it seems like the author goes to great lengths to explain them in a way that makes everything as complicated as possible. I thought the idea of a textbook was to clearly impart information and ideas. This book does the exact opposite. The author is clearly more interested in 'sounding smart' than explaining thing in a helpful way.

......"Better than I expected....." !

To be honest, I thought the book was going to be.......stupid. IT IS NOT! ( I am personally put off by the word "hacks", as so many authors use the term loosely,and often mistakenly.) This book is a quick read, but it TRULY offers some advice and insight that ANYONE can put to use. ( I found the chapter on free education, (("MOOC's")) especially useful! ) The other information within the pages will help you save a bit of money , too. I have worked in the hotel industry, and can personally attest to the effectiveness of the "hotel upgrade hack". This book is well written, and informative, and at the time of this writing; it was free. GET IT NOW!

This Saved Me Some Money

This had several strategies for saving money and making it go further. Some I knew about and some I didn't.
It was well written and easy to read. I read it in a day or two. I am always on the lookout for new ways to save money on anything and everything.

The one tip that really helped me was the one about buying discounted gift cards. I used one of the links in the book and I saved myself some money. It only took a few minutes of my time to accomplish this feat!

About the Author

R. Bruce McBride is retired Commissioner of University Police for the State University of New York. He is also retired from his position as professor at Utica College, where he served as Executive Director of the Economic Crime and Justice Studies Division and Director of the Economic Crime Management program. At Utica, he coordinated the criminal justice internship program, which allowed for semester-based study placements in the United States and overseas. Dr. McBride holds bachelor and master’s degrees from the State University of New York at Oswego and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University at Albany. He is a past president of the Criminal Justice Educators Association of New York State.

Adequate introduction to C

This is another introductory book on C. As far as I can see the explanations for the syntax and constructs of C (variables and their types, For and While loops, If and Case statements, functions, arrays, structures, dynamic memory management, file management, etc.) are up to scratch. The coding examples are short and instructive. The exercises given are doable and have solutions provided online by the author. So far so good.

What I scrutinize in an intro C book, though, is its coverage of pointers and what is done with them. The author introduces pointers in chapter 18, goes a bit further in the next chapter, and then uses them to construct a linked list in chapter 20. An exercise in chapter 22 asks the reader to write a program to save a linked list to a file (solution available online though I think it would have been an idea to have the code in the book). Lack of coverage of linked lists using pointers is what distinguishes utterly basic introductions to C (such as Perry and Miller's excellent "C Programming: An Absolute Beginner's Guide") from slightly more advanced books. Gookin's book (the one being reviewed here) thus belongs to the "slightly more advanced" category. The C books by Prata, King, and Horton cover more, go further, but may be less accessible to the beginner by dint of their size. In brief and to reiterate, this well-written book is somewhere along the spectrum between utterly elementary texts like the one by Perry and Miller and more voluminous -- and hence less accessible -- tomes by King, Prata, and Horton.

This is a quasi-rebuke of Chris Putman's rather hysterical downvote.

Started learning C back in colled in '84. Fast forward about 20 years of which I've touched C little to non aside from occasionally viewing program listing. Picked up the previous version of this book, and it was an enjoyable trip down memory lane.
This book is exactly what it says, and geared exactly for whom it says its geared too.

If you are new to programming, or someone who had some exposure to C quite a while ago and need a refresher, this book will do it in spades. The only complaint I've really got it that it does hand-hold you quite a bit, which on the whole for most, is probably what they want.

This whingeing about not using free() is specious.
Any beginner using this actually can allocate as much memory as they want or think they need without any issues whatsoever. Only and unless they are allocating more than 1,000,000,000 (1GB) for an array or struct, or some other quite non-Beginner-ish application.
The OS will clean-up after the User quits the program.

If the User for some reason actually does need such massive amounts of memory, on a continuing basis as the program runs, he will get an "Out of Memory" error, or more likely under Windows "Limited Virtual Memory
Your system has no paging file, or the paging file is too small.".

It would be at this point that the User would realize he does in fact need to use free().

Which is sort of, rather, kind of, exactly what Gookin says in the book.

For 99% of anyone ever learning from this book, they will never, ever, yes really, ever, run into this situation.

The previous review apparently had so many issues like this with the book that he had to put it down.
Oddly, he only listed this one, and this one honestly seems to be a tempest in a teapot.

Out of the great many, many books on C, C++, C#, etc, this is one of the very few that can take even the rankest new programmer-to-be, and walk them through a 2 semester class in a nice and light-hearted, somewhat humorous way.

And I don't review much on Amazon or anywhere, so that should tell you how satisfied a customer I am.

Gentle guidance for the timid beginner

This tutorial leads you by the hand all the way, but in contrast to Perry's C Programming Absolute Beginner's Guide, it is more detailed and expects readers to exert some effort. The tone is light and friendly as befits a Dummies book and the pace never drags. The author does a good job of not using concepts without explanation or at least some warning.

He gives complete instructions for installing the Code::Blocks IDE and uses it throughout, so it is equally convenient for Windows, Linux, and Mac users. While C11 is assumed, he doesn't actually get into specific C99/11 features. I found the explanations very polished and clear, though longer than in Perry, so gratification is less immediate. There were a few things that raised an eyebrow, such as when he said that enums are an old-fashioned feature you should just ignore (p. 225).

Some people don't like the glib style of the Dummies books. Horton's Beginning C is written in a matter-of-fact tone. For a very gentle and detailed approach without the glibness, try Kochan's Programming in C. Although both target the beginner, neither holds your hand to the degree that Gookin does.

The book is more like a travel guide for London than a children's book for the movie. Pictures of London landmarks with photoshopped paddington bear. Story at an 8th grade level of reading.
