Another involving fantasy novel from Howell

I found it amusing to read the only other reviewer (so far) of Morgan Howell's latest fantasy, "A Single Deed". On one hand they claim the novel is too long, then go on to say it should be a trilogy. Hello? Wouldn't making it a trilogy make it LONGER?
At any rate, I liked this book. A LOT. In my opinion, there wouldn't be a story here unless it was told in the first person narrative. It was refreshing to me to see the world that Howell created from a different perspective than that used in the trilogies. And although the main character is an Urkzimmuthi (or Orc to all you washavokis), I found the story to be very human in most aspects. Which is exactly why I felt I could connect with the character and her experiences.
If you have read either of the two trilogies written by Howell and set within the same world, some of the exposition that describes the orcish society and beliefs a little redundant. That didn't bother me, although I felt there were a couple of places where it slowed the story down. However, I realized it was necessary for those readers unfamiliar with the setting here. There is still enough intrigue and action to maintain the pace, and the tale builds up in what I found to be a very interesting way. I liked the manner in which this story fleshed out the world of orcs and humans beyond what he/she/it developed in the trilogies.
This is really an excellent entree into Morgan Howell's fantasy world for someone who may not want to commit to a trilogy. I still feel the oeuvre of Howell's work is some of the best written fantasy fiction I've read. I look forward to the next book or books in the series!

Enjoyed this tale very much. Morgan Howell is a terrific storyteller and I'm a huge fan of his stories of the Urkzimmuthi. Such a wonderful development of a rich culture.

Great storytelling

I have read pretty much all of Morgan Howell's books that I can get my hands on and loved them. This one was no exception.
