Basic Decision Making and Problem Solving

I was looking for a guide for Root Cause Analysis to teach fellow Sales Engineers on problem solving technique, when I stumbled on to this book This is a very basic book but on page 39 there is a 7 point spiral process that illustrates the tasks in making a decision. Page 62 & 63 Have a model for how to approach a systems problem which is what I was looking for - it can be placed on two power point slides which fits my needs. This is a quick read and has basic information - it's a good primer but doesn't have a lot of depth.

About the Author
Daniel Paolicchi was born in London and raised in Italy until age 12. He received his undergraduate degree from Tulane University, where Daniel majored in Spanish and spent his junior year abroad in Spain studying at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Daniel earned his Master’s degree in Spanish Literature from the University of Virginia. He has taught High School Spanish since 2003 and has been teaching at Montgomery Bell Academy (Nashville, TN) since 2008

Daniel’s first publication was the first edition of Barron’s AP Spanish Language Flash Cards (2011), a collaborative effort with Dr. Alice Springer. Following that, he edited Dr. Springer’s 7th edition of Barron’s AP Spanish Language prep book, and in 2014, authored the revision the 8th edition of Barron’s AP Spanish Language and Culture prep book. In 2015, Daniel authored the 2nd edition of Barron’s AP Spanish Language Flash Cards (2016), and he is currently working on the 9th edition of Barron’s AP Spanish Language and Culture prep book.

CD does not include all audio, but book content is excellent

I am a Spanish teacher. I have rated this book as 5 stars because (for my purposes) the format and content were challenging and high quality. The practice exercises & practice tests will help you to improve if you work consistently day by day. With that said, there is one MAJOR issue. I discovered that the disc included actually DOES NOT include ANY of the audio needed to do the practice print & listening combo, listening, & speaking exercises, although it DOES include the audio needed for the practice tests. This makes the book absolutely pointless to purchase. I called Amazon for an exchange after detailing the problem with the disc (it's like the tracks weren't all burnt to the disc or something which makes the practice sections (90%) of the book useless), and I was assured the disc would be thoroughly checked prior to being sent out to me. Of course, the disc was still perfectly packaged in the back of the book (NOT checked as promised, so 0 stars for that customer service rep) and of course I had the same issue with this new disc... It only included the audio needed for the practice tests, not any of the practice section. However, I made a call to Barron's (the company who actually makes the product), and was sent a replacement disc-- excellent customer service! This third disc actually has all the audio needed for the entire book (practice sections & exams), and it has been wonderful. No complaints (once I got the materials that are advertised here). I was absolutely frustrated upon learning that the disc does not include everything that is needed to work through the book, and I doubt it's just a fluke because Amazon sent me 2 copies of this product and they both had the same issue with the disc. While I understand that Amazon does not actually make this product, Amazon should ensure that what it advertises is what's actually being sold. If you're going to order this book, I would suggest calling straight to the company (Barron's) and saving yourself a lot of time and frustration.

Terrible no more

Where are the audio files related to the practice activities? Why does the CD only have 16 tracks, when there should be over 50? The few tracks that appear, are not labeled.

Update:
Barron's has phenomenal customer service. The publisher contacted me upon seeing this post and rectified the situation by sending me not only the audio files, but a new book as well. It is hard to give the correct amount of stars at the moment, since I have not yet gone through the materials. But we are off to a much better start!

MIssing answer explanations and exemplary response examples

While there are lots of pointers and plenty of practice opportunities in this book, it does not come close to being as helpful a resource as the Barron's French AP prep book. I purchased this because I was so impressed by the answer explanations and exemplary response examples I saw in the French version, but this book does not have those! It includes only answer keys (no explanations as to why you got the answers wrong or where to find the correct answer), and has no examples of good composition or presentation, as included in the French version. I would NOT buy this again, until they revise it and add the 2 necessary components that are missing.

You would expect, given the information based society we live in, people would have a better understanding on how data should be regulated and control. Unfortunately, it is generally not the case. Where there is a gap in the knowledge, Data Protection: A Practical Guide to UK and EU Law steps in to fill the void. And does it admirably well!...What is surprising about the book is how easy it is to read. I can only commend Carey's approach: it allows both lawyers and non-lawyers to become familiar with the issues and principles...This is an excellent text which is exactly what it says it is: a practical guide to UK and EU data protection law. I recommend this to both lawyers who want a better understanding and non-lawyers who want a better understanding.

About the Author
Schuyler W. Huck was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1943. He attended school in two Chicago suburbs (Riverside and Glenview), receiving a high school diploma in 1961 from Glenbrook North H.S. His undergraduate work was taken at DePauw University (Greencastle, Indiana) where he graduated in 1965 with a major in psychology and a minor in sociology. He pursued a doctorate in Educational Psychology at Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois), receiving the Ph.D. in 1970. His doctoral specialization was applied statistics, testing, and research design.

In 1970, Dr. Huck joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as an Assistant Professor. Affiliated with the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1974 and to Professor in 1977. Since receiving his doctorate, Dr. Huck has taught at two other educational institutions while on leave from UT. For 10 summers between 1977 and 1986, he was employed as a Visiting Professor in the Psychology and Education Departments at the University of Nevada (Reno). From July, 1988 until July, 1989, he served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado.

Over the past three decades, Professor Huck has been involved in an ongoing program of research and scholarly activity. He is the senior author of three books: (1) Reading Statistics and Research (with the 3rd edition published in 2000 by Allyn & Bacon/Longman), (2) Rival Hypotheses: Alternative Explanations for Data-Based Conclusions (published in 1979 by Harper & Row), and (3) Statistical Illusions (published in 1984 by Harper & Row); he has had 34 technical papers published in a variety of refereed journals (Teaching Statistics, Educational and Psychological Measurement, Journal of Educational Statistics, American Educational Research Journal, Journal of Educational Measurement, Psychological Bulletin, Journal of Experimental Education, Journal of Applied Psychology, Science Education, Teaching of Psychology, Mathematics Teacher, Journal of Counseling Psychology, Research Quarterly, Physiology & Behavior); and he has made over 60 oral presentations of his work at professional meetings (International Conference on Teaching Statistics, American Educational Research Association, American Psychological Association, and regional meetings affiliated with these two national organizations).

In addition to making his own contributions to the professional literature, Professor Huck has been heavily involved in screening the work of others and in serving as a consultant on others' projects. He has reviewed book prospecti/full manuscripts sent to publishing companies, papers considered for possible publication in professional journals, and abstracts submitted for possible presentation at conventions. In his role as a consultant, Professor Huck has worked on several projects, including (1) test-development efforts conducted by: the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, the American Association of State Psychology Boards, Tennessee's State Departments of Education and Human Services, the Child Welfare Institute (Atlanta), and UT's Center for Government Training, (2) a three-year NSF research project designed to assess new procedures for helping math teachers assist students improve their creativity and problem-solving skills, and (3) a trial in which the State of Tennessee was being sued and for which Tennessee's Office of the Attorney General asked Dr. Huck to testify as an Expert Witness in the areas of testing, research design, and applied statistics.

At various points in his career, Dr. Huck has received awards/recognition from students, colleagues, and administrators. While at DePauw, he received the Frank C. Tucker Award for Leadership. Early in his stay at Tennessee, the Student Government Association tapped him as one of the University's Outstanding Teachers. Soon thereafter, colleagues at UT gave him the first Annual Award for Outstanding Faculty Research in the College of Education. The major honors bestowed upon Professor Huck, however, came (1) in 1983 when he was selected to be a UT Distinguished Service Professor, a prestigious title that he holds for the duration of his stay at the University, (2) in 1988 when he was asked to serve, for a year, on the faculty at the Air Force Academy as a Distinguished Visiting Professor, (3) in 1984 and 1990 when the scholarly work of two doctoral advisees received Outstanding Dissertation Awards in national competitions conducted by AERA, (4) in 1991 when he was elected by his colleagues at other universities as President of AERA's Educational Statisticians SIG, (5) in 1993 when he was one of the first two faculty members given the title of Chancellor's Teaching Scholar, a post involving work with UT's Chancellor and other top administrators, and (6) in 1995 when the GTA Mentoring Program (a project that grew out of his idea on how to improve undergraduate education at research universities) was deemed worthy of support by UT and the Alcoa Foundation.

For the beginner researcher

Fantastic book! Full of good advice on how to interpret the usual statistical tests, and on how to critically revise the interpretations of other researchers. It also gives useful insight into analysis techniques and on possible interpretation traps. A must have for the beginner researcher who does not want to overstate the significance of his/her results.

If you have to take Statistics, at least get this book!

I've said it before, and I will say it again. I hate Statistics! It is not just that statistics originated as a means to classify and rank people according to their perceived social worth. Statistics is still used that way as evidenced by the publication and use of the book The Bell Curve. In comparision to a pure science like Neuroscience and also to mathematics, statistics is a subjective science. Everyone knows that statistics can be manipulated and used to show whatever the researcher wants to show...and it is more prone to abuse then most other hard sciences and math.
Ok, having said that...I had to take a statistics course at the last minute (read that last year) while working on my dissertation, because it was determined I did not have enough measurements classes. This book was required, but it really has not been used as much as the other textbook which is equation-based, but I quickly found that I preferred this book!
This textbook explains how and why statistics are used in all sciences, social sciences, etc. and how they are to be interpreted when seen in a journal. It is very concise...the authors for once are not writing for their peers, they are writing for their audience (which are going to be students, grad students, patient/consumers, etc). The book is written with an eye towards helping the reader understand the reasoning and logic behind using statistics. It is done with minimal decorative writing, and with a sense of humor. It makes use of good examples of both good and bad statistic use in papers and journals, it lambasts those who need lambasting, and it has a sense of humor.
If you have to understand statistics so you can read medical journals, sociology, educational journals, etc. this is the book to get. It is immensely helpful. I will rid my library of all other statistical books, but this one I will keep (since my statistics outside of class will be either on computers or I will do qualitative research!)

Not a stats guru? This book will help

As a doctoral student who is trying to get a handle on statistics, I found this book very helpful. Huck does a nice job of supporting what you learn in statistic classes (all the formula and theory `stuff') with real world interpretations and examples. I find his book to be a good resource when I am reading and critiquing journal articles, and when I am trying to word my statistical results in appropriate research vernacular.
Please note - this book is not a stats how to book and as such contains no formulas.

Nail-biter from Cover to Cover

I remember the news stories, I remember the whole "Free Kevin" movement on the web, I remember reading about his release in newspapers and online magazines. It's awesome to read about these events, now, from his perspective.

I've read several of the negative comments written about this book, and I don't understand why these people read the book in the first place. They talk about not being able to sympathize, they judge Mitnick for taking advantage of people, they hate Mitnick for the way he exploited his mother and grandmother, they talk bad because they can't understand what drove Mitnick to continue to break into systems, they are irritated because of his cocky attitude. In my opinion, those reviews are more emotional than objective.

In common with the people who wrote negative reviews, I too felt bad for his mother, grandmother, friends, him, and everyone he ever used for his criminal activities. I too felt that he had plenty of opportunities to stop and get away clean. I too rolled my eyes when I read about how much smarter he was than everyone else, especially towards the end b/c it'd been ongoing throughout the book. But it's Kevin Mitnick - the social engineer hacker king - Interaction w/ people and mind-screwing most of them is expected, as is the manipulation of relationships in his favor!

My 5 stars because:
I like (auto)biographies, I am an IT professional, I enjoy narratives - this book was a perfect read for me. I could hardly put it down. It only took me a couple of weeks to read (light reading in evenings and heavier on weekends).

I was hooked from the beginning - opening word by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. The book contains a few jaw-dropping moments as Mitnick explains how he infiltrated organizations and systems. It was engaging from cover to cover - reading of how he evaded capture, how he ran counter surveillance on the FBI, how he changed identities, and a whole lot more.

You'll enjoy this book if you:
- are an IT professional
- prefer reading crime-drama novels, autobiographies, or fugitive/on-the-run type novels
- can handle a subject without hating the subjects (can you appreciate genius in a person regardless of how they use their ability?)

I Can't Put It Down

I only have a couple free hours at night, and a few hours in the weekend to read. Every moment free I've had since last week, I have spent reading. Only four days, I am on page 162. This book is one of the best I read. Oddly, Catch Me If You Can is one of my favorite movies. The book is kind of on the same lines but Kevin hacked and used social engineering for people information. Frank in the movie used social engineering for conning people and stealing. Kevin never stole from people.
This book follows Kevin from the time he was around 8, learning to pick locks. I laughed and thought, "at 8 I was playing with Barbies, what a waste of my time." Kevin Mitnick writes in a way that most people can understand and explains every term. Heck he explains how he did everything he accomplished. Ghost in the Wires is a fascinating book. If I had three full free days, I'd have it finished by now. I can't put it down.

Excellent primer on social engineering that everyone should read

I had heard of Kevin Mitnick, but this is the first time reading about his exploits. I think this book should be required reading for anyone who works in help desk or other technology; heck, I worked in a hospital, and I think all of the staff should have been reading it too. In addition to the interesting technology he introduces us to, it gives a great view of social engineering and how easy it was for him to get what he wanted.

Kristina, Celeste and Juliana were all born into the cult The Children of God to the same father, David Jones, who remains a member of the organisation. Kristina and Celeste share the same mother. The three girls were separated from each other and their mothers at an early age and lived in various missions throughout the world under the 'care' of various foster parents. Both Kristina and Celeste were eventually able to escape the cult and study psychology at university. Celeste remained in the cult until well into her twenties, when falling pregnant provided the catalyst to make her escape. Juliana is now studying psychology and philosophy and is still in contact with her remaining siblings in the cult.

A humbling, stunning, significant book on the reality of cult survival

This book is exceptionally accurate about the Children of God and indeed, all cults of that era. I have personal knowledge because I was raised in a different cult myself, and I have a good friend who was raised in the Children of God and told me many, many similar stories. His experience and now this book taught me that my own bizarre experiences were nothing by comparison. This friend and I lost touch when he changed his name for the...4th time...in 3 years. I asked him why he kept changing his name and he said, "Because it doesn't matter." Imagine being stripped even of your own sense of identity? Only someone raised as these women report would fully understand what they went through. It appears toward the end that the sisters each wrote their own chapters, because the writing style of one of them (not the main author) is shockingly bad. But considering the haphazard education these women endured, it can only break one's heart that they were never taught how one crafts good writing. This is an engrossing read and a well-executed autobiography. Kristina, if you ever read this review, I send a huge hug to you and all your family, with the exception of your father and Joshua. What a lot you all endured!

Save & Protect the Children! Don't Abuse them!

Three sisters of the same father, Kristina, Celeste, and Juliana, describe their harrowing accounts of childhoods. Instead of being children, they were sexual slaves and slaves to the cause for the Children of God cult. This book is quite a read but it's important to realize how the Children of God or the Family International operate in order to destroy them. The Children of God and the Family International is nothing more than a cult focused on sexual orgies with minor children involved such as the young girls on the cover.

Their father, Christopher Jones, should have protected them all along. But part of cult culture is the separation of children from their biological parents or those who will protect them from the abuse. Cult culture is bent on secrecy, lies, deception, and illusions.

Their late leader, David Berg, was seen as the supreme being rather than a human being. His death did not help in it's organization's deconstruction. Like other cults, the Children of God changed their name to the Family Internationl. The sisters here provide an insider's look into this twisted world where children are routinely abused in various ways particularly sexually.

Another issue with this cult is that they move around frequently rather than stay in one place. They keep a low profile and try to maintain a sense of normalcy to outsiders. The insiders like the sisters here write about the illusions to the public and to outsiders such as relatives who visit their loved ones.

This book is a triumph against the Children of God for revealing shocking accounts of blatant abuse of children and even it's adult members. The Children of God leaders make decisions for the children and the adults. Their mysterious founder David Berg lived on the run and in hiding much like Bin-Laden. He sent messages through his trusted advisors to his members about the end of the world and how to train soldiers for the end-times.

The girls' father Christopher Jones blindly accepted David Berg's leadership and his word as the holy gospel. He believed Berg was a prophet and not a pedophile. Even in the end, I don't think their father realized the overwelming damage that the Children of God inflicted upon his own offspring. Often, he was out of their lives and on missions for the organization. He was a true believer who never doubted his prophet unfortunately.

For three sisters, they had to learn to escape the Children of God cult not just physically but emotionally, psychologically, and sexually as well. When you join a cult or are born into one such as the Children of God, your mind is not yours to begin with and neither were their souls and bodies.

This book will help in stopping Family International and exposing their practices. The sisters have done a brave job in detailing painful memories and experiences of their lives. My heart goes out to them and all the other survivors.

My only complaint about the book is the lack of photographs except for the cover and back. Another complaint is the writing is a bit off. But other than that, their experiences are invaluable for those survivors out there.

Escape from the Children of God Cult

Children growing up under the domination of a cult are said to know only one thing, the society of the cult. That is not necessarily true. We all have a sense of what is right and wrong. Some of us turn off that knowledge in order to survive. Some rebel.

Regardless of what the Children of God cult claims (and I have no idea what it claims these days), it is a cult based on perversion. It calls sex, even sex with children, the ultimate expression of love. It perverts the Gospel of Christ, whose love was to release us FROM sin, not enmesh us in it.

There were many that escaped from the domination of this perverse power structure. Some escaped through suicide. Three young women escaped by labeling what happened to them as wrong, and finding a way to survive outside the confines of their world.

They paid a price no child should pay, and once they left, they needed to learn to survive in a completely different world than that which they knew.

Follow Celeste, Kristina, and Juliana as they struggled through verbal, physical and sexual abuse. Cheer with them as they faced their doubts, and finally escaped.

This is a true story. Names have NOT been changed to protect the innocent. It this story, the adults were not innocent, and they should be brought up on charges of sex with children, incest, rape, imprisonment and torture.
