Very insightful book

This very accessible book takes you into the awareness of a master writer's everyday life as she shares with us the
necessity to live one's true life, truly and take responsibility for it, it's fall-out, as well as it blooms. Elaine Feinstein,
walks a high wire and maintains her balance. I read this in the hopes of attaining some of her valor and of course
her wisdom. Fascinating biography.

Multi-leveled memoir of a poet

IT GOES WITH THE TERRITORY tells the story of poet Elaine Feinstein - about her childhood in Leicester, UK, her university days in Cambridge, the development of her literary reputation, and her encounters with remarkable people, as well as talking in often painful detail about her marriage to a brilliant man who was neither sensitive to her talents as a poet nor particularly caring as a human being. The book evokes a lost world of a Cambridge mostly dominated by public school students, which was gradually undergoing social and economic upheaval in the Fifties. While there were still many elitist rituals, there were more opportunities for talented students such as Feinstein to find outlets for publishing her early work, as well as cultivating a network of friendships that proved exceptionally useful to her during her professional life. The work also focuses on Feinstein's Jewishness: while not really problematic for her, it seemed to cause difficulty in British society during the Fifties and Sixties: it seemed that anti-semitism still permeated the highest and most prestigious corners of the literary establishment. What I found most interesting about the book was the way in which Feinstein discusses the relationship between her public and private selves; she successfully brought up three sons, and coped with a difficult marriage, which grew even more difficult in the late Seventies and early Eighties, when she discovered that her husband had a regular lover. Nonetheless she kept the relationship going, and when he passed away at a relatively young age, Feinstein was genuinely sad. When talking about her poetry, Feinstein shows how writing poetic language is an effective means of trying to make sense of experiences. "meaning" can emerge in several ways, through the placement of words, through meter, line-arrangement, rhythm as well as simply trying to "decode" the poem. Unlike prose, poetry has a way to express the inexpressible. This is perhaps the most haunting memory of a book that is both honestly yet entertainingly written.
